In the rural municipality of Belobaka, in Madagascar’s Bongolava region, rice collectors are taking advantage of the national situation to impose extremely low prices on farmers. Within just two weeks, the price of a kilo of paddy rice has fallen from 1,700 Ariary to 1,000 Ariary, plunging producers into an alarming economic situation. This sudden drop threatens the stability of a community already weakened by insecurity and the lack of public support.
