The Ministry of Communication and Culture keeps saying that “freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Madagascar are not flouted”. However, to date, these notions have struggled to gain ground in Madagascar's journalism community. On the face of it, the sector seems harmless, yet carcinogenic. Despite complaints, appeals, the law on the media communication code, and its place as the fourth estate, the journalist remains between “eating his fill” and “doing his job”. On 03 May, the Ordre des Journalistes de Madagascar, OJM, brought together a number of journalists from various media outlets to celebrate World Press Freedom Day. As with every celebration, the same calls were made for journalists to practice their profession autonomously.
