In honour of the 30th anniversary of the group Tirike, one of the first groups to popularise Tsapiky, a musical genre from south-west Madagascar that rose to prominence in the 60s and 70s, we wanted to take a look back at the chronology of this unique musical genre from the country. Tsapiky is generally associated with the late Rasoa Kininike, one of the best-known singers of this often turbulent folk style, followed by her son Lico Kininike, the late Dedake, guitarist Teta, Damily, Jarifa and the author of ‘Valala’, Mirasoa. However, they are not the only ones, as Tsapiky was already known locally before its official entry onto the national music scene by the group Tirike, on 07 November 1993, in Antsahamanitra.
