Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy , primatologist and president of the International Primatological Society

- Maurice Ranjalahy lecture 2min

With a biodiversity that is unique in the world, Madagascar attracts the curiosity of experts in the green sector. However, according to experts such as Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy, President of the International Primatological Society (IPS) and co-founder of GERP (Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches sur les primates de Madagascar), this wealth has been left to die. GERP is a legal association that works to research, raise awareness and denounce primates. It was founded in 1994 by Professor Rakotosamimanana, when Pr. Ratsimbazafy was still a student, and is now 30 years old. The group has around 300 members, including Malagasy and other nationalities. The Association manages various protected areas, such as Maromizaha, in the Sofia region. During these years of action and activity, GERP has contributed to the search for new species of lemur, and the primatologist has even given his name to the smallest lemur in 2020, “Microcebus jonahi”.
