Darkness and power outages may soon become a thing of the past in Madagascar. With the signing of a majority stake agreement in the Sahofika hydropower project, President Andry Rajoelina has committed the Malagasy state to an ambitious strategy for clean energy production, positioning hydropower as a driving force for national development. Nestled in the forested highlands of the Onive River, about a hundred kilometers southeast of Antananarivo, a massive construction site is about to begin. Named Sahofika, this 192-megawatt project symbolizes the hopes of a country still largely in the dark. Backed by an unprecedented public-private partnership, it could electrify millions of households, transform the national economy, and put Madagascar firmly on the path to sustainable energy transition.
