The restitution of the remains of the Sakalava king Toera and his warriors marks a turning point in Madagascar’s historical and cultural memory. On September 1, 2025, Madagascar welcomed the remains of King Toera along with the skulls of two of his war chiefs, repatriated from France after more than a century. An official ceremony was held at the Mausoleum of Avaratr’Ambohitsaina on September 2, attended by the President of the Republic, the Kamamy family, traditional dignitaries, and the Sakalava people. This event, described as “historic,” symbolizes the recognition of anticolonial resistance and reignites the debate on the restitution of African heritage still held in Western museums.
